A need? No "need," per se', but if somebody wants to buy it, and there's little doubt that somebody does, then somebody else will be ready to sell it.

Re: The Mighty, Mighty Zep |
Why more product? Perhaps because the O2 arena in London has been reserved for a late November date - whether a one off show or full on tour, with son Jason on drums, remains to be seen. People who claim to "know", which I can't really imagine is anyone other than the musicians themselves, say the tour is a foregone conclusion and that the next year spring/summer stadium tour will in fact happen.

Re: The Mighty, Mighty Zep |
Actually Willie Dixon is one of the only ones they saw fit to credit.
I used to love Zeppelin but still couldn't believe the audacity of them to have song writing ( not arranged by ) credits on songs they obviously didn't write like In My Time of Dying and Nobody;s Fault but Mine.
but then I realized that apparantly EVERY ( go look for yourself ) bluesman who ever sang CC Rider and Stagger Lee apparantly wrote them. Explain how that could be?

Re: The Mighty, Mighty Zep |
yeah right, THAT's it. Of course I tend to cut the bluesman more slack because they were getting screwed on $, but stealing or not crediting is the same thing no matter who's doing it. Not to mention most white artists were getting screwed as well until artists like Zeppelin demanded they get what they knew they were worth. Of course Buddy Holly was way ahead of his time in that regards insisting he produce his own music etc.
Just trying to balance this is all. I have the same tendency to root for the little guy, as well as seeing how black artists were exploited. But then consider Elvis. On one hand he's getting ( undeservedly ) credit and fame for playing music that black artists had pioneered, but then look on the other hand. By him being white some kids were able to squeek it by their predjudiced parents ( or they themselves predjudice too maybe )and eventually the acceptance, as well as the changing times too of course, came back to the original artists. Hence the revivial that a lot of old timers like Muddy Waters and Missippi John Hurt ( and lots otheres ) were able to have fortunately before they died.

And didn't Chuck Berry think Elvis could play a guitar like ringing a bell?

Many claim so - I have never seen anything definitive to prove it. Googling might turn up something.
Also, I've heard Elvis' "Suspicious Minds" is Elvis singing to Col Tom. Puts a new twist on the song.
You see my post re new Gram Parsons' release? - apparently the Amoeba guy is planning several more, including some live Byrds material.

You see, this all proves my point. CLEARLY Chuck Berry should be singing this song about Marty McFly. Remember " Back to the Future"? HELLO
I could see that being about Col. Tom except for the lovin you too much baby.
I think I read that Gram Post but I forgot it. Coincedentally I watched that Fallen Angel documentary this weekend. Have you seen it?

Re: The Mighty, Mighty Zep |
Oh yeah definately. Heavy on the Chris Hillman, Emylou, and Keith Richards interviews but why not? Probably the three heaviest collaborators with him. Covers his whole life, very personally. I had no idea ( before I saw it for the first time, this was my second time watching it )about his whole story. Apparantly he was quite priveledged with a trust fund but also had LOTS of tragedy in his family. His real Dad committed suicide, his Mom and stepDad were both bad alcoholics. Also he's painted as being more than a little out of control, kind of leaving everyone to pick up the mess because he was too drunk/high to record, didn't show up for rehearsals because he was hanging out with the Stones instead. He would come off as a Stones groupie if Richards himself wasn't talking about what kindred spirits/best friends they were. Also they cover the whole stealing his body thing and burning it. I get the idea that everyone hates Kaufman for doing it or at least the way he did it.
Amazing with the tragic picture that was spelled out that he came out with some of the most brilliant influencial groundbreaking music ever. He's definately a legend in my book.

Re: The Mighty, Mighty Zep |
Read Hickory Wind? It's good - many years since I read it. Some pan it, but I learned a lot from it.
BTW, my pal Kevn Kinney (who is on the archive) and a certain Mr. Buck (a guitar player for some old has been Athens band) do a great version of "Cody, Cody" on a Gram compilation that came out a long time back. Send me an email and I'll burn you a copy (some other interesting cover artists on there as well)

No I haven't read that one.
Sure I'd love a copy. There was a tribute that came out awhile back that I allways wanted to get. Is this the one with Cowboy Junkies doing OOh Las Vegas? Not my favorite on there but the first one that came to mind.
Incidently Peter Buck is interviewed on that DVD. Seems to be the only one that didn't actually know him.

Wow, that's so long ago that's my old post name replying to you. Didn't realize you and I went that far back : )
I'm glad someone had allmost the same name, I never liked that handle anyway. It's hard to be original when your name is John.

Re: The Mighty, Mighty Zep |
While they were the first band I ever took to on my own (at the ripe old age of 8, mind you), much of their story, make that MOST of their story is not known to me. But it sounds like a whole other can o' worms you could be opening up there, and I'm not of the mind to go fishing right now.
